Jump to Recipe

Some nights, dinner feels like a juggling act. One child is begging for chicken nuggets, another insists they only want pasta (with butter, not red sauce), and you’re just trying to get something balanced on the table without becoming a short-order cook. If this sounds familiar—you’re not alone. As a mom and a dietitian, I know firsthand that meals need to be simple, adaptable, and family-friendly to actually work on a weeknight.

That’s why I love this easy breaded chicken recipe for families. It’s crispy, comforting, and versatile. Even better? It’s easy to adjust for food allergies and picky eaters without making five different meals.

Why This Recipe Works for Families

  • Allergy-friendly options – choose regular or gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • No eggs needed – use water, milk, or a dairy-free alternative if eggs are off the table.
  • Picky eater appeal – crispy chicken tenders feel familiar, like restaurant or freezer favorites, but you control the ingredients.
  • Great for getting kids involved – kids can easily help you make this recipe, which increases the chances of them trying it
  • Balanced meal pairings – I’ll give you serving suggestions so you can round out the plate without overthinking.

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts or tenders (cut into strips if using breasts)
  • 1 cup regular or gluten-free breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ÂĽ teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 large egg, or 2–3 tablespoons water, milk, or dairy-free milk as a binder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for baking) or cooking spray

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk the egg (or alternative binder).
  3. In another bowl, mix breadcrumbs, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Dip each chicken piece into the wet mixture, then coat in the breadcrumb mixture.
  5. Place on baking sheet, drizzle lightly with olive oil (or spray).
  6. Bake 18–20 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown and cooked through (165°F).

Make It a Balanced Meal

To keep dinner simple but nourishing, pair your breaded chicken with:

  • Veggies: Steamed broccoli, roasted carrots, or a simple side salad.
  • Carbs: White rice, penne pasta, or roasted sweet potatoes.
  • Fruit: Strawberries, apple slices, or grapes on the side for extra color and balance.

Here are two quick combos families love:

  • Breaded chicken + broccoli + white rice.
  • Breaded chicken + penne pasta + strawberries.

These meals give kids a familiar “safe food” (like pasta, rice, or fruit) alongside new flavors, making mealtime less stressful for picky eaters.

Tips for Success with Picky Eaters

  • Include a safe food. Serve at least one item you know your child accepts.
  • Let kids dip. Ketchup, ranch, or honey mustard can make new foods feel less intimidating.
  • Make it interactive. Let kids help coat the chicken—they’re more likely to try what they’ve made.

Final Thoughts

Family meals don’t need to be complicated to be balanced. With this easy breaded chicken recipe, you can adapt to allergies, keep picky eaters comfortable, and still sit down to one meal together.

Whether you serve it with broccoli and rice or pasta and strawberries, you’ll have a dinner that feels both doable and delicious.
